Tattered Jeans - fashion or madness?
Cast your mind back to 5years ago, do you remember
the kind of dress you and the people around you used to wear? Do you recall how
loose or how tight and even how long or short they were? Funny how things have
changed isn’t it? Fashion has undergone a lot of evolutions. From ‘Pimpinese’
to ‘otofister’, from ‘tunaabu’ or ‘hold my legs and leave my thighs’ to skinny
jeans or ‘pencil', a lot has happened in this short period of time. But what do
we have now? Tattered or ripped jeans! How did it begin? Who brought the idea? Whoever he
or she is will definitely be proud now I believe. Even though it is one of the
most criticized fashion trends, it is also one of the most patronized.
Tattered jeans has become one of the most common
trends amongst people in Africa , Europe, in fact all over the world, a
universal trend some would say. The high demand for this type of jeans makes me
regret a decision I took about 6 years ago. I had a pair of jeans which was given to me by my mum on my birthday. It was so dear to me and as a result, I wore it occasional.I didn't want it to get faded or look old. Unfortunately, after some time, it got torn on the knee level of
both legs so sadly, I had to let it go because I didn't want people to think I was going mad or I was extremely poor. Few years on and here we are, people
wearing torn and ripped jeans comfortably around town, to their work places etc all in the name of fashion.
Gone are the days where people seen in tattered
attire were regarded as either farmers, painters, very poor and in most cases mad. But no!
These days it is a thing of the ‘big boys and girls’, the fashion inclined and
the celebrities. Because of this, it is no news to go to a boutique and notice
the price of a pair of tattered jeans being almost twice the price of a pair of normal jeans.
Regardless of the price, these jeans are always out of stock, yes, that is what
the people want. To keep up with the trend, those who can’t afford tattered
jeans buy the normal jeans and cut them with blades or scissors into their desired shapes
and designs, isn't this amazing?
Some call it madness, others, fashion. What do you also think? Is it fashion or madness? Can it stand the test of time? How long can it stand the criticisms? Well, let’s enjoy this trend whiles it lasts, go and grab yours from the near by boutique. If you have an already torn jeans, lucky you, don't throw it away as I did. Rock it to work, the beach, the club or that friend’s party.
